GLP-1 receptor agonists—such as semaglutide (Ozempic®, Wegovy®) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro®, Zepbound®) and Liraglutide—represent a significant advancement in the treatment of type 2 diabetes and obesity.

Originally developed to help manage blood sugar, these medications have also been shown to be highly effective for sustainable weight loss. When combined with personalized lifestyle changes—like healthy eating and regular physical activity—patients can experience meaningful improvements in both weight and metabolic health.

GLP-1 medications are generally well tolerated. Most side effects are mild, such as nausea or digestive upset, and can often be managed by adjusting the dose or timing.

What's on the Horizon:  Retatrutide

Exciting advances in obesity medicine continue to emerge, with Retatrutide being one of the most promising next-generation therapies currently under investigation. Unlike today's GLP-1 medications, Retatrutide is designed to activate three metabolic pathways (GLP-1, GIP, and glucagon receptors), which may provide greater improvements in weight loss and overall metabolic health.

In clinical studies, participants experienced substantial weight loss, along with improvements in blood sugar control, waist circumference, liver fat, and other cardiometabolic risk factors. By targeting multiple pathways involved in appetite regulation, energy expenditure, and metabolism, Retatrutide has the potential to help patients achieve results beyond those seen with current GLP-1 therapies.

While Retatrutide is not yet FDA-approved and is not currently available for routine clinical use, it represents an exciting step forward in the future of medical weight management. As new therapies become available and receive regulatory approval, our practice remains committed to offering evidence-based, cutting-edge treatment options to help patients achieve their long-term health goals.
